Error message

%s: %s

In the message, %s marks a value that the engine fills in when it raises the error.

The story

You gave a regular expression to matches or to replace regex, and the pattern itself is broken. Not that it did not match anything, but that it cannot even be compiled. Maybe a parenthesis is missing, a bracket was never closed, or a repeat symbol has nothing in front of it. The engine passes the regex library's own diagnostic along, so you see exactly what it did not like. Why refuse? Think about the alternative. If a broken pattern quietly answered false, or replaced nothing, you would read it as the pattern simply did not match. You could never tell a typo apart from a legitimate no. Your script would carry on with the wrong belief, maybe skipping every line it should have caught. A loud refusal is far better. The message shows the row and the diagnostic. Read it, find the character the library complains about, and fix the pattern. Test it on a tiny sample first, and then run it on the real data.
